The space of Selfhood
It is worth beginning this piece with a bit of acknowledgement: I feel incredibly #blessed to exist within a place of plenty. I have access to the things that meet my family’s and my needs, wants, and then some. After all, I am spending some of my free time writing about, and compiling shoppable links to very beautiful, very unnecessary things.
I am hyper aware that not everyone is able to live with so much and that while I am sharing my gratitude from a cozy home with my loved ones nearby, there is still genocide, war, famine, poverty, discrimination, marginalization, racism, so many other ‘isms, ignorance, etc etc etc. We are very far from being a perfect people, no matter how you define “perfect”.
And! despite the bleakness that overflows from media, there is good news*!
*Check out Reasons to be Cheerful for regular reminders of the snuggly stuff. Thanks Rob Brezsny for enlightening me to these resources.
It is a privilege to celebrate, from a comfortable place of not needing, the positive changes that have been slowly but surely happening on this planet.
I assume that if you’re reading this you are also able to say that at least your basic physiological (and probably even wifi) needs are met and I am very glad for that!
3 cheers for celebrating when and where we can!

I’m guessing most of us are not spending our days trying to outrun wild animals or survive by hunting/gathering, and many don’t even have to grow our own food, let alone leave the house to get what we need.
Even more remarkably, since the subscription model, a large portion of us don’t even have to remember what we need and when we need it! It just shows up at our door, right on schedule.
It’s amazing the brain space and time that has freed up thanks to all of these technological advancements.
So where is all that extra space time going?
Hellooooo social media! Helloooooooooo you reading this through one form of social media or another.
But we all know how it drags us down, and we all know how it lifts it up, so let’s not spend too much time poopoo’ing on the socials while we both take advantage of it.
Shameless plug: Substack. Instagram. TikTok. Pinterest.
As you may have already read on my personal Substack, some of/a lot of my space is consumed with working through negative self talk, anxieties, and identity discovery. Yeah, I’m a millennial. It’s what we do.
Thankfully, many (again, not all) of the taboos around mental health, working with a professional, asking for support, and sharing one’s needs have drastically faded. It is becoming more and more “normal” to live vulnerably, express emotions, and talk through trauma without judgment, because as it turns out, we all need safe outlets to dump our shit.
The “experts” (and many not experts who’ve experienced the benefits (myself included)) say that spending time practicing self care, reflection, meditation, and a state of alignment can be some of the most profound methods for transforming your life.
And the icing on the self-help cake? We’re even witnessing progress in the wellness world!
MORE Sp__________a__________ce
What once was primarily a mind-fullness practice of “change the way you think and the things you think about to change your life”—is now evolving to include the body-mind connection. To put it very simply: we are invited to feel our emotions- both “good” and “bad” -to process and release them, and then, eventually, our thoughts begin to change, and so does our life. What an impactful (and sometimes ridiculously uncomfortable) way to shift!
So! if we get to live without thinking much about the act of survival, and we get to talk about the things that haunt our mind, AND we can let go of the weighted bits of our past by simply (simple, not easy) feeling our feelings, what do we do with all of that extra space?
Option A: We fill it with pointless facts. Oooh or pointfull facts! That sounds nicer. Eg: An elephant's trunk has over 40,000 muscles, more than the entire human body.
You’re welcome.
Option B: We look at gorgeous things that make us feel like our real selves and not just a carbon copy of everyone else.
See below!
Option C: We clear out that space so the Higher Self that we came here to be can re-make itself known. AKA that part of ourselves that was alive and well at birth, and comes pre-installed with deep knowing, and peaceful expression.
I vote C. then B. with smatterings of A. just for funzies.
